On 1st June 2016 the Department of Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) approved two new management and leadership trailblazer apprenticeships. 140 trailblazer apprenticeships are currently being delivered with over 350 still in development, all with the aim of having high quality apprenticeships designed by employers themselves. This will make the apprenticeship more relevant for the employers as well as the learner, and form a part of the Government plan to create 3 million new apprentice starts by 2020, which has been criticised for focussing more on quantity than quality.
These new management and leadership apprenticeships, which add to the Chartered Manager Degree Apprenticeships launched in November 2015, have been created by a group of 30 employers. It’s estimated they will create 30,000 more professional team leaders, operations managers and managers in the UK workforce, giving employers more choice of where to invest not only the current funding available but also the upcoming apprenticeship levy in the development of their existing employees.
BIS have approved these apprenticeships to tackle the fact that poor management and leadership costs the UK economy over £19billion a year through low productivity. Supporting evidence comes from UK Commission for Employment and Skills (UKCES) stating that nearly 200,000 new management roles are vacant each year, but CMI states that 70% of employers fail to train their first-time managers.
