Care Certificate Induction Programme

The Care Certificate is a set of standards that social care and health workers stick to in their daily working life. It is the new minimum standards that should be covered as part of induction training of new care workers.

The induction course takes place over four days. One day (which can be inserted at any point during the course) is for Moving & Handling Training, and the other three days are for the Care Certificate.

The Care Certificate (three days)

This covers an introduction to the following fourteen standards:
• Understand Your Role
• Personal Development
• Duty of Care
• Equality and Diversity
• Person Centred Work
• Communication
• Privacy and Dignity
• Fluids and Nutrition
• Mental Health, Dementia and Learning Disabilities
• Safeguarding Adults
• Safeguarding Children
• Health and Safety
• Handling Information
• Infection Prevention and Control.

A fifteenth standard, ‘Basic Life Support’ will be addressed by attendance at an approved First Aid training course to be arranged at a later date. The new member of staff then has three months to complete the knowledge and competence elements of all fifteen standards. The new member of staff will however be certificated as ‘competent’ for Moving
& Handling and will therefore be able to work legitimately on the ‘shop floor’ for this purpose.

Moving & Handling (one day)

This covers knowledge of the following subjects:
• Legal Background
• The Spine
• Back Pain Risk Factors
• Risk Assessments
• Team Work
• Safe Moving Principles
• Policies and Procedures
• Benefits of Mobility to Residents

Practice with the following techniques and equipment: hoists and slings, stand aids, turn aids, lifting and moving boxes, assisted stands (helping people out of chairs), and slide sheets.
