Makaton – Early Years Taster Workshop

This Taster workshop is specifically designed and tailored for all Early Years Professionals. It provides an introduction to what Makaton is and who it is valuable to use with, focusing on a fun and easy way to learn to sign with babies and children aged 6 months – 5 years.

Using Makaton signs is valuable for a child’s communication skills and language development.  It encourages expressive language and also a child’s comprehension of language.  Signing is also beneficial to use with children who have EAL (English as an Additional Language). It gives people the opportunity to learn and use approximately 55 signs and symbols too!

This fun and interactive session also provides individuals with the opportunity to discuss ideas on how Makaton can be used and to reflect upon their own communication skills too.

Participants receive handouts covering the vocabulary they have learned and general information regarding further Makaton training and resources.

So why not have a go and learn how to sing and sign favourite Songs and Nursery Rhymes, and enjoy all the benefits of signing with children and / or babies – at the same time giving  children  a head start!

LEARNING OUTCOMES

• Describe the purpose and benefits of using Makaton within own roles
• Use 20 concepts in symbol and sign from the Makaton Core Vocabulary
• Use a further 15 concepts in symbol and sign relevant to their own environment and needs
