Level 3 Childcare Apprentice NAW Case Study – Rosie Costello

Why an apprenticeship?

I chose to do an apprenticeship because I didn’t have experience in this field and I liked the idea of having ‘hands-on’ learning. I learn better this way than going to college with a lot of reading and writing.

Tell me about your apprenticeship and what you love most about it?

I am doing my level 3 in childcare, I do my apprenticeship in a nursery with children from 3 months until they go to school at ages 4/5. What I love most is being able to learn and be with the children every day. Seeing the children grow and develop is very rewarding.

What accomplishment are you most proud of and why?

Overall I’m proud of how well I am getting on with my course, I am currently around 20% ahead of where my progress is expected to be which I am proud of.

In your opinion, what are the benefits of an apprenticeship?

Being able to learn in the place I want to work, getting paid while learning, having support from my work colleagues, manager and my assessor if I need it.

What skills have you developed during your time as an apprentice?

I feel I have developed a lot more confidence, communication skills. Planning skills, team working skills.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years? What are your future plans and aspirations?

In 10 years I would have liked to have done my level 5 qualification which would enable me to become a manager of a nursery setting, which is what I aspire to be.

What advice would you give to someone considering an apprenticeship?

Go for it! I wish I didn’t wait so long to get into childcare. If anyone is thinking about starting a career but doesn’t like the idea of college or university, they should definitely do an apprenticeship. Starting my apprenticeship last year was the best thing I’ve done yet!
