Q&A with Lucy Brocklehurst – Business Admin Apprentice

Some of our current learners have taken part in a Q&A, sharing their experiences of studying with Aspire Training Team. Lucy Brocklehurst is currently undertaking her Business Administration Apprenticeship at Tops Gillingham.

What does a typical day look like for you?

A typical day for me as a Business Admin apprentice is generally helping out where I can, answering the phone, replying to emails, and going into numbers within the nursery rooms if I am needed. I work 08.30-14.30 so a big part of my job is also to welcome parents and children when they are dropped off and picked up. I help the Admin wherever I can.

What tasks do you complete on a day-to-day basis?

Jobs I do on a daily basis are keeping up with enquiries and visits to the nursery from prospective parents, updating the diary and answering questions from any parents. I also help with the filing and shredding of documents. I regularly welcome people and children into the building, and if any visitors come in then it is my job to sign them in and ask them to read our Health and Safety poster. I print the registers for the following week and always check through previous registers. There are always jobs that I am asked to complete throughout the day, for example, printing additional documents.

Why did you decide to start an apprenticeship?

I decided to start my apprenticeship with Aspire because I wanted to get a hands experience of being in the industry and actually learn on the job, as I find it easier to learn this way! The people are really friendly and I can always ask for help if I am unsure of anything. An apprenticeship means I am also getting paid, and at the same time learning more and more every day. At the end I can walk away with not only the qualifications but also the experience and knowledge I may not have had from studying elsewhere.

What advice would you give somebody wanting to start an apprenticeship?

My advice for someone thinking about an apprenticeship would definitely be go for it! You can find an apprenticeship in almost every career and it is such a good opportunity. You get a better understanding of what the job entails and how everything works. You get paid to learn and it is one of the best things you could do.

Would you recommend an apprenticeship?

Yes definitely, it is a really good opportunity to learn and gives you valuable experience.
