Stress Awareness Month 2023

Stress and poor mental health are one of the biggest challenges people in the UK are facing on a daily basis. Stress awareness month has been held every April since 1992 to raise awareness of the causes and treatments of stress.

It is important to understand what causes stress, particularly at work. The most common causes of stress at work include not being able to cope with the demands of the job, not receiving enough information or support, or having trouble with relationships in the workplace, or being bullied. The Stress Management Society have been running a campaign, #choosehope, which has taught that having hope is imperative to overcoming stress and poor mental health.

Read below to see our tips for managing stress, not just at work, but also at home.

1. Exercise Regularly

Exercise is a great way to reduce stress and improve overall health. Regular exercise helps to release endorphins, which are natural mood boosters. It also helps to reduce the production of stress hormones such as cortisol. Exercise doesn’t have to be intense; even a 20-minute walk during your lunch break can make a difference.

2. Practice Deep Breathing

Deep breathing is a simple yet effective way to manage stress. It helps to slow down your heart rate and relax your muscles. You can practice deep breathing exercises throughout the day, especially during stressful situations. Simply take a deep breath in, hold it for a few seconds, then slowly exhale.

3. Take Breaks

Taking regular breaks throughout the day can help you to manage stress. It gives you time to recharge and refocus. You can take a short walk, grab a healthy snack, or simply step away from your desk for a few minutes. Taking breaks can also improve your productivity and creativity.

4. Prioritize and Organize Tasks

Having a clear understanding of your priorities and organizing your tasks can help to reduce stress. Use a to-do list or a planner to keep track of your tasks and deadlines. This will help you to stay focused and avoid feeling overwhelmed. It’s also important to set realistic goals and deadlines, and to break down large projects into smaller, manageable tasks.

5. Practice Mindfulness

Mindfulness is the practice of being present in the moment and being aware of your thoughts and feelings. It can help to reduce stress and improve your overall well-being. You can practice mindfulness by taking a few minutes each day to focus on your breathing, or by taking a mindful walk during your lunch break. There are also many mindfulness apps available that can guide you through exercises.

6. Get Enough Sleep

Getting enough sleep is essential for managing stress. Lack of sleep can make you more susceptible to stress and can negatively impact your mood and productivity. Aim to get 7-8 hours of sleep each night, and try to establish a consistent sleep schedule.

7. Seek Support

If you are experiencing high levels of stress, it’s important to seek support. Talk to a trusted friend or family member, or consider speaking with a mental health professional. Many workplaces also offer employee assistance programs that provide confidential counseling and support services.

In conclusion, managing stress at work is essential for maintaining good health and productivity. By incorporating these strategies into your daily routine, you can reduce stress and improve your overall well-being.
